How many thinkpads does one man need?
Wrong, the answer is more

Want some more? I have a few T420s that are probably fixable. Maybe even an old W -series of some sort.

Most of our employees have Thinkpad T580s with 32GB of RAM, i7s and so forth. I’m the IT guy so my main PC is a desktop since I’m supposed to be the one person in the office every day. The best laptop I could scrounge up for myself was an HP 650 G2 from 2016. At least I found an HP docking station that went with it in a box of stuff.

God no, I’ve got a few more lurking around as is. The one on the right is an old t410 running manjaro

Those would be nice, the newest one I have is still only running a 4th gen i5. But thats why I love them, freaking un-
killable machines

I could probably cobble them together into a working system but like who would want to buy a ten year old laptop (besides nibby)

Exactly, I bought this old t410 7 years ago for around $100. But, I
t
hrew an SSD in it and installed
linux and works fine for an email/word processor machine

The first T580 that we bought had a few issues but since they got their drivers up to snuff they’ve been dead solid. So far in my time with this company we’ve gone from Dells to HPs to Lenovos. I’ll have to think outside of the box for the next round of upgrades.

I’ve held onto them because I would feel bad sending such awesome machines to the dump. I don't have the energy to try parting them out.

X1 carbon?? I’ve been eyeing some used ones on and off. Couple coworkers have them and they’re pretty solid machines

I know how you feel. Plus there is soooo many on the used market you would never sell anything

If my recollection is correct, I have 5 thinkpads in this house. 1 of them was even made by IBM.

Oh the classic!

Nah, the T580 is a different model than the X1 Carbon. The T-series isn’t as thin and light as the X.

Sorry, thinking x1 carbons as your next upgrade! unless you guys need the oomph

Here ya go...

This is always the correct answer, my house has 5 of them and was perusing eBay for another for a specific project...

I have 4 or 5 older ThinkPads, including one that is getting old enough to be able to drink legally. I did buy another one in 2018 for my dad, a nice i5 model that needed a display, but he was content with his Dull and passed on my offer. I ended up giving it to a friend that was out of work and needed something to apply for jobs instead of using the computers at the library.
Even though I have plenty of these machines I usually end up using the 17" HP or the 2008 MacBook Pro...

Oh, sorry. My mind ain’t what it used to be. Of course I’m not really sure it ever was. I was pondering on the fact that we’ve gone through the major PC makers so now we might have to get weird.

tisk tisk, I prescribe one hours use of the red

I’m looking at some used x1 carbons to replace this old t410. But then I relized all I need it for is email and oppo, so here it
stays... for now...

good man, blue enter key is best enter key

We’ve always been a Thinkpad family. My Aunt was a division head at IBM and she could extend her discount to family. My mom, who was a travelling businesswoman, could buy brand new high spec Thinkpads for the same price as a mid-range Dell or HP. I've only ever owned one non-Thinkpad laptop and it was just awful.

That would be a kick ass position to have!

I was contemplating picking up a t440p to use as a hackintosh, they’re a pretty popular base for it and pretty cheap.

Ive got a t440p as my main worker now, not a bad machine, but the keyboard isn’t the same as the old ones

I'll have to ask her but I think she lead a software development team? Possibly Lotus after IBM acquired them?

That’s my old T420. Miraculously it took the Win10 upgrade like a champ. I’ve got my audio interface hooked up to it for recording and stuff.
The smaller one is an X260 which was my first SSD. No blue enter key tho.

Yeah I’m with you the island style just isn’t the same. I’ve got a x201 (the tablet) and an old x60 I keep around just for that amazing original keyboard...
I DD (for personal) an E480 and it’s quite nice, work is an HP that’s meh.

Sigh. Yeah. I miss my ThinkPads... I went Dell last time. Ugh.
